I (finally) got my laptop back. My husband has a tech buddy who had it for a week. He tried all manner of things in his efforts to avoid wiping the hard drive clean. In the end, I was right-that's what it took. It's essentially a brand new computer, but I'm not terribly happy with it. That's not tech-guy's fault. The screen looks all stretched out (yes-I tried tweaking the screen settings, it didn't help) and Firefox keeps closing for no reason. I'm ready to kick it to the curb.
My goal is to replace the beast with a sleek Macbook within 6 months.
